Ergonomics: Sitting is Just as Bad as Standing??

ree

In today's modern workplace, ergonomic injuries are one of the most common yet overlooked risks in office environments. Poor workstation setup, prolonged sitting, and repetitive tasks can lead to discomfort, musculoskeletal disorders, and long-term health issues. Fortunately, with the right knowledge and adjustments, these injuries are largely preventable.

In the 2021-22 financial year, approximately 497,300 individuals in Australia experienced a work-related injury or illness, representing 3.5% of those who worked during that period.

Let’s explore the key steps to creating an ergonomic-friendly office space and fostering a culture of safety and well-being in your workplace.

What Are Ergonomic Injuries?

Ergonomic injuries, also known as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), occur when there is repeated strain on the body caused by awkward postures, repetitive motions, or poorly designed workstations/seating.

Common examples of ergonomic injuries include:

  • Lower back pain from prolonged sitting or poor chair support.

  • Neck and shoulder strain from improper monitor placement.

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome from incorrect keyboard or mouse use.

  • Eye strain from inadequate lighting or screen glare.

These issues impact employee wellbeing and lead to decreased productivity and increased absenteeism. Make no mistake, ergonomic issues aren't just "niggles", they can become serious disabling injuries

Tips for Preventing Ergonomic Injuries in the Office

  • Pick the Right Chair and Desk

    • Ensure the chairs in your workplace support the lower back, are adjustable and, for those that need it, you have a couple of footrests on hand.

    • Desk height should allow the arms to rest comfortably at a 90-degree angle while typing. The desk should be big enough to allow for the work being conducted.

    • It is highly recommended that desks are height adjustable.

  • What about Monitors?

    • Monitors should be directly in front of the worker, with the top of the screen at or just below eye level.

    • If the work requires many applications or switching between applications, consider extra monitors

    • Have some monitor stands or adjustable arms on standby.

  • Keyboard and Mouse

    • Don't get fancy, a standard-sized keyboard is good for most people

    • A good quality and moderately sized mouse is perfect.

    • Consider having some wrist rests for those that need it.

  • Optimise Lighting and Reduce Glare

    • Consider the position of desks. Perpendicular to windows will minimise glare.

    • Use blinds or curtains to control natural light.

    • Depending on the work, you may need more or less overhead lighting.

  • Promote Movement and Variation

    • Encourage sit-stand desks\ to allow employees to alternate between sitting and standing.

    • The key is MOVEMENT, standing for long periods is no better than sitting for long periods. The body hates static postures. Get them moving!

    • Create a workplace culture where taking movement breaks is encouraged and supported.
